The Government of Canada’s recent $10 million announcement for the Canada Community Security Program (CCSP) is, quite frankly, too little, too cute and two and a half years late. Since October 7, 2023, Canada has become a global leader in Jew-hate—a staggering, shameful statistic. In the wake of the largest slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust, Canadian Jews weren’t met with solace or solidarity; we were met with a tidal wave of hostility. While not everyone attacked us, far too many publicly condoned the hate—or worse, met it with a deafening silence.
The numbers aren’t just “rising”—they are exploding. In 2024, B’nai Brith Canada reported a 124% spike from 2022 in antisemitsm. By 2025, Statistics Canada confirmed what we already felt: Jewish Canadians were 25 times more likely to be targeted by a religiously motivated hate crime than any other group. In 2023 in Canada, Jews make up roughly 1% of the population, yet we are the targets of roughly 70% of all religiously motivated hate crimes – the most of all in that Canada.
We have moved from words to weapons. Just this past week in March 2026, three GTA synagogues were hit by gunfire. We’ve seen firebombings in Montreal and arson in Vancouver. In almost every city across Canada Jewish neighbourhoods and businesses have been targeted for routine harassment, often ignored or condoned by police.
In this climate, the “indignation” displayed by elected leaders at the mere suggestion of funding for security is a betrayal. It sends a clear message: our safety is “up to us,” but the government might offer a partial subsidy. This is a Jew Tax, plain and simple. I am exhausted. I am tired of being tired, offended, angry, and dismayed.
Our leaders see the data. They see the bullet holes. Yet they remain silent. Why? Is it fear? If they are too afraid to stand against Jew-hate in 2026, what does that say about the collapse of our society?
Jew-hate has been a fixture of the Jewish experience since the Torah, but we once expected better from Canada. We long for October 6, 2023—a time when the rates of hate were already too high, but look like a sanctuary compared to this. My experience has proven one thing lately: the bottom can always fall out further.
