Windsor’s first and only pizza festival and competition is back for the second year this October at Higher Limits!
Windsor pizza is popular among Windsorites, expats, and tourists alike, but its notoriety continues to grow nationwide. Whether it’s the signature cheese, tangy sauce, or shredded pepperoni and canned mushrooms, one fact is known: Windsor pizza is the best pizza. Period!
Recently TVO released a story titled Knead to know: ‘Windsor pizza’ is a thing, and it’s delicious, stating: “If canned mushrooms and shredded pepperoni are wrong, Windsorites don’t want to be right.”
Last year Higher Limits saw over 12 different Windsor pizza companies compete over a series of 3 months to determine who made the best meat, veggie, & specialty pizzas in Windsor.
Round 1 of Windsor PizzaFest 2017 features:
- 2016 Winner: Sam’s Pizzeria and Cantina
- Primo Pizza (2016 contender)
- Downtown Pizza Co. (Downtown Windsor’s newest pizza joint)
“We saw a huge increase in business in the weeks after we won, and deliveries doubled!” said Ralph Mattano, owner of Sam’s Pizzeria and Cantina. “I wasn’t sure what to expect when we signed up, but I’m really glad we did! I’m definitely going to come back – Windsorites love pizza!”
The event is a celebration of all things we stand for: great times & atmosphere, friends, promoting Windsor institutions and our community, and of course, PIZZA!
“In 2016 we saw over 1000 people attend Windsor Pizza Fest, including 12 pizzerias; we knew right away we wanted another slice at it,” said Jon Liedtke, co-owner of Higher Limits. “We had so much fun it stole a pizza our heart, and keeping the puns in the pizza box, we’re calling a massive delivery to Higher Limits again this year!”
Windsor PizzaFest 2017 is the first and only pizza competition in Windsor and we’re looking for pizza companies to be involved. “Do you think your pizza stands up to the test? Show us what you’ve got,” said Liedtke. “We’re willing to accept all entries and we pay for the pizzas.”
The first event is scheduled Mon. Oct. 2 and each night features three pizza companies and two timeslots for attendees to enjoy pizza, 5:30 pm – 7 pm, and 7:30 pm – 9 pm.
This year participating pizza companies will prepare three pizzas for the competition:
- Windsor Pizza
- Meatless
- Anything Goes/Specialty.
Two prizes will be awarded each night: audience favourite, and judges’ choice (judges comprised of a panel of notable Windsorites (chefs, restaurant owners, media personalities, etc).
One pizza company will advance from each round, and the all around winners will compete head-to-head at the Windsor PizzaFest 2017 Finale at Higher Limits on Nov 27.
Tickets are $12 advance and can be purchased online or $15 door. Ticket includes six slices of pizza & one drink.
When: Mondays: 5:30pm to 7pm; & 7:30pm to 9pm.

- Round 2: Mon. Oct. 16
- Round 3: Mon. Oct. 30
- Round 4: Mon. Nov 13
- Final Round: Mon. Nov. 27
