CTV WINDSOR: Open Streets block party approved by council

CTV Windsor – February 2, 2016

A new two-day pilot project to get people outside and active has been approved by Windsor city council.

About eight kilometers of streets and roadways will be closed for several hours twice this summer, connecting various neighbourhoods.

But the decision wasn’t without opposition.

“It’s $55,000, $7,000 dollars per hour for eight hours, in my opinion, I just don’t think it’s sustainable,”says Councillor Paul Borrelli.

Councilors Hilary Payne and Borrelli voted against $55,000 that will see neighbourhoods from Olde Sandwich to Ford City connected without traffic, encouraging residents to get out and be active.

The event will happen twice – Sunday, July 17 and Sunday, Sept. 18.

“I don’t think it’s going to benefit any vendors there, I don’t think it’s going to benefit anyone in my opinion,” says Borrelli.

The ‘Open Streets Windsor’ initiative was approved Monday night on a vote of 8-2, with the backing and support of the local health unit.

Newcomer business Higher Limits on Ouellette is excited about the idea, saying they will donate $2,500 to the event should all five BIAs involved match it.

“We at Higher Limits think that the open streets event is just an incredible event that the City of Windsor needs to have,” says co-owner Jon Liedtke.

They encourage other merchants to follow suit.
