Windsor Regional Hospital received a “B” grade in the most recent CBC Fifth Estate investigation entitled “Rate My Hospital” that investigated the performance standards of hospitals across the country. While WRH didn’t receive the highest possible grade, CEO David Musyj is proud of his team and the hospital as a whole.
In official statements sent to OurWindsor regarding the “Rate My Hospital” grading, Mysyj appeared to be on the defensive.
“The Hospital ranking concept is very positive. Any people that speak against it should be asked to develop their own ranking system rather than complain,” said Musyj. “The data used is the hospital’s own data. Is it perfect? Of course not. But doing nothing is not an option.”
WRH serves a population of roughly 400,000 in Windsor and Essex County, features an average length of stay of five days, has roughly a 6-hour ER wait time and features a death rate of 95 (the norm is 100).
Musyj explained that WRH has 14 core indicators his team focuses on daily to assess how the hospital is performing as an institution.
“They cover areas such as hospital acquired infections, mortality rates, patient falls with injury etc,” said Musyj. “We know by measuring our results and proactively addressing these indicators [that] we are reducing the number of patients we harm at the hospital and increasing the quality, safety and satisfaction of all patients we serve.”
While there is always room for improvement, Musyj understands that the hospital is on a continual “journey.”
“We are well on our way with our journey [but] we have far more to do to enhance the quality, safety and satisfaction of our patients,” said Musyj. “The team at WRH make me proud to say I work with each and every one of them at Windsor Regional Hospital.”
Areas of Assessment by Rate My Hospital:
Mortality after major surgery: WRH received an “A” in this category which measures the number of patients per 1,000 who die in hospital within five days of major surgery. WRH reports fewer deaths after major surgery than an average hospital of the same size.
Nursing-sensitive adverse events, surgical patients: WRH received a “B” in this category which measures the number of patients per 1,000 who develop programs tied to nursing care. WRH reports roughly the same number of adverse events tied to post-surgical nursing care as a comparable hospital.
Nursing-sensitive adverse events, medical patients: WRH received a “B” in this category which measures the number of patients per 1,000 who develop programs tied to nursing care. WRH reports roughly the same number of adverse events tied to nursing care as a comparable hospital.
Readmission after surgery: WRH received an “A” in this category which measures the number of surgical patients per 100 forced to return to the hospital within 30 days of discharge. WRH shows fewer patients are readmitted than other comparable hospitals.
Readmission after medical treatment: WRH received a “B” in this category which measures the number of medical patients per 100 forced to return to hospital within 30 days of discharge. WRH readmits roughly the same number of patients as a comparable hospital.
