CTV Windsor – Rich Garton
Downtown Windsor is now home to the biggest medical marijuana lounge in Canada.
Higher Limits has opened its doors on Ouellette Avenue, near University Avenue.
According to police, it’s fully legal, but on the city level, unregulated.
The vapour lounge quietly opened a few weeks ago. It’s a place for medical marijuana card-holders to legally get together and smoke.
Owners say everything is above board and they plan to keep it that way.
“We don’t think anyone should think twice about walking into our establishment and smoking a joint,”says co-owner Jon Liedtke.
He says it’s about growing the community.
“For too long, there have been people who have been using, hiding in the corners, afraid to come out into the open and have a conversation about it.”
Liedke says more than 100 people a day have passed through the doors and paid the $5 cover charge.
Of course, he says there are house rules. You must be 18 or older to enter and you must also bring your own cannabis. It’s not sold on the premises.
There’s also no alcohol, tobacco or drugs allowed.
Police are aware of the establishment and say there have been no complaints or investigations to date.
Higher Limits has a security director, a retired Windsor police officer, who will help train staff to ensure they operate within existing laws.
