The U.S. Supreme Court just clipped Donald Trump’s wings, and for once, the America First agenda hit a legal wall. In a 6-3 ruling, the justices finally admitted what many already knew and had been saying: Trump overstepped. Invoking emergency presidential powers to slap sweeping tariffs on allies wasn’t just aggressive; it was an illegal power grab.
While the ruling provides a momentary sigh of relief, uncertainty remains the only constant in our trade relationship. Thanks to CUSMA, most Canada-U.S. trade dodged these specific bullets, but don’t break out the champagne yet.
The real knives – the auto, steel, and aluminum tariffs – weren’t part of this ruling, and still stand. These are the primary engines driving the damage to Canada’s economy.
Ministers Joly and LeBlanc were quick to jump on the mics, with Joly confirming the usual diplomatic dance with the U.S. Embassy.
It’s the standard Canadian response: politeness while the hippopotamus in the White House keeps destroying the furniture.
Apparently Canadians and Canada as a whole is such a dire threat to American national security that it takes a Supreme Court intervention to keep the trade routes open.
If we’re truly the threat they claim, maybe it’s time the Yanks start acting like it; and it wouldn’t hurt for Canada to start acting like it too.
