[Windsor Star – Sarah Sachelli] Windsor pizza is the stuff of legends, but a downtown vapour lounge wants to settle once and for all who makes the best pie in town.
Higher Limits, which bills itself as a cannabis community centre, is launching what it calls the Windsor Essex Pizza Fest. Beginning Sept. 1, with events every three weeks, the Ouellette Avenue lounge will put local pizzas to a taste test. Audience members and an all-star pizza panel will decide which pies are worthy to advance to the final competition on Nov. 24.
“I’m dumbfounded it hasn’t been done before,” said Jon Liedtke, Higher Limits’s co-owner. “It’s about time for Windsorites to be able to stand up and definitely say, ‘This is the best pizza.’”
The first night will feature pizzas by Arcata, Cheese Wheelz, Gino’s and Riviera. The pizzerias will compete for the title of best meat pizza, best cheese pizza, the best anything-goes pizza and the best pizza all around. One company will be crowned the ultimate winner.
Liedtke said participating restaurants will be expected to donate pizzas for the competition. In exchange, they’ll get the free publicity the event generates.
“This is a business partnership,” Liedtke said.
“Cannabis and pizza go together very well.”
